The dogs started barking madly this morning and we raced outside as it is snake season and they usually warn us about snakes. But we found they had put this fellow up a flowering gum tree and were letting us know that we had a visitor. We locked to dogs inside and let him be.
This is the first koala we have seen in the garden for about 18 months - we used to have several regulars. We do hear them quite often in the trees across the road. I think possibly the dogs scare them off and our neighbour across the road has planted a lot of food trees which are now mature. Koalas in a small area can do a lot of damage to the trees they prefer and we have one dead Eucalypt to bear proof of it.
They look very cute and cuddly, but they have long, strong claws and can give the dogs a good belting if they are cornered.
We checked on our guest about 30 minutes later, but he had moved on.
